At St George’s C of E Primary School has embraced the New Primary Curriculum introduced in September 2014.We believe that all children should have as many educational opportunities as possible. We therefore place a large emphasis upon a stimulating curriculum that develops all children’s talents. This prospectus will set out the details of the curriculum. It places a strong emphasis on children reaching high standards in English and mathematics and computing (Information Communication Technology). Classrooms are equipped with the latest interactive white boards and laptop provision to support teaching and learning across the curriculum.

We also believe in a broad and balanced curriculum that allows all children the opportunity to develop their talents. The School has set up an extensive range of curriculum opportunities that includes a commitment to sport, art, drama and music. To illustrate this commitment we have a specialist sports teacher employed by the school to work across all age groups. The school also has an extensive music provision working with Wrockwardine Wood Arts College and Telford and Wrekin music service.

The curriculum is divided into subject areas; however, we see knowledge and skills as crossing subject boundaries. Learning is integrated where appropriate and curriculum planning makes many curriculum links. The vital skills of collaboration and independence are evident in all our work.

Children at St George’s work in  a variety of mixed ability classes with setting an option from year 3 to 6. We have found this system gives our children the security and confidence to learn to their maximum potential. There is a comprehensive target setting, tracking and assessment system in place throughout the school. Children know the areas of learning they are working towards and teachers are consistently aware of the children’s strengths and challenges.

St George’s has achieved the national ‘Healthy Schools’, ‘Active Mark’ School Games’ and ‘Arts Mark Award’.

The school ethos places a great emphasis upon rewards and incentives for children to want to do well. There is a range of award systems for children to encourage a positive approach to all aspects of school life. Every Friday we hold ‘Celebration Assemblies’ to reward individuals, groups or classes. At the end of the school year there are a variety of awards, cups and prizes for the year 6 children. These are presented at the Leavers’ Concert and Prize Giving Evening in July. This positive system of children’s support is summarised by the ‘Green Support’ programme. This is lead by the Children and Family Support manager. We aim to give our families support when they need it to remove barriers to learning for children.

The school has a Special Needs Co-ordinator without a class teaching commitment, who can focus on working with teachers and parents to support children who have difficulties with their learning. We have developed a programme of support for our Gifted and Talented children. This includes a register of all children and the areas in which they excel. Curriculum planning and extra curricular provision is then adapted for these children. The Special Needs programmes and the Gifted and Talented support ensure all our children have the opportunity to reach their potential. The school fully supports children and adults with disabilities and will make all reasonable adjustments to the curriculum necessary for all children.

The school has comprehensive safeguarding procedures in place. All staff, teaching and non teaching, have regular training on child protection. The school follows appropriate procedure regarding recruitment of staff with key senior managers, including governors, having undertaken safer recruitment training.

Where we identify children are not making the expected progress the school has a range of intensive support programmes. Some of these programmes are specifically during school time; others involve after school learning or ‘booster’ sessions.’
