MFL at St Georges

At St. Georges, we teach French as the Modern Foreign Language at KS2. Despite it only being statutory for KS2, we also teach it to our year 2 children - who thoroughly enjoy it - and an early start to learning languages benefits tremendously.

French is taught by Mrs Sohier across the Key Stage and children greet her around school with the French phrases they have been taught!

Children learn the language through different media, these include: games, songs, written work, stories, use of maps and French artefacts. Albert and Annick are twin bears who accompany Mrs Sohier each lesson.

On the first Tuesday of every month, we hold a French-themed breakfast where children have the opportunity to try a continental-style breakfast such as: croissants, pain-au-chocolat, brioche, ham, cheese and pate.

Within years 2 and 4, one of the sessions is planned for children to fully immerse themselves in the language. They are invited to wear red, white and blue; they taste different foods from France; they read French magazines and newspapers and listen to French music.
