Welcome to Year 1
Year 1 Staff
Homework is given out every Friday and should be returned at the latest on the following Wednesday, so it can be marked ready to go out again on the Friday.
There is a list of common exception words in your child’s homework book and in the middle of the reading record. Children are expected to read and write these by the end of Year 1.
Children should be reading a minimum of 4 times a week at home and we encourage parents to record this in their reading records. In Year 1, a member of staff will change a child’s reading book when parents have written in the reading record and children have read the whole book. We encourage children to keep the same book if they struggled with it the night before, please write this in the reading record if you wish to keep the book.
In June, all year 1 children will be tested on their phonic ability. They will be asked to sound out and blend a number of real and nonsense words. The sounds that are being tested are located in the middle of their reading record. Please ensure your child knows all of these sounds by the end of the year to enable them to do their best in the phonics screening. A pack to prepare your child for the phonics screening will be handed out nearer to the time.
PE and Forest schools
P.E kits should be in school all week and can be taken home to be washed on a Friday.
Children should have wellies and suitable coverings for their legs (tights are fine) in school all week for Forest Schools. A warm coat should also be in school during the colder months.
Water bottles are allowed in classrooms. No squash or fizzy drinks please.
Children are allowed to bring a healthy snack at break time or they can access the school tuck shop, at a cost of 50p per item.
All items (PE kit, wellies, uniform, book bags, water bottles) should be labelled with child’s full name and class to make it easier to help locate missing items. If lost please check in the Year 1 lost property box, in your child’s locker, in the large hall and also the office.
